5th Avene

Hola from NY, This week has gone quickly. We were suppose to have a baptism this week. The man is from Ecuador, but his wife was having a baby that same day. Obviously it was postponed. We are planning his baptism for this week. Last week was a lot of the same. We go out and invite everyone to church. We had some people come to Church this week we invited so that is always a good sign of more baptisms to come. Today for P-day we had a Manhattan day. The iconic pictures of the streets in downtown are exactly how you would imagine. If you look down the street, all you see is heads of people and tall buildings above that. The amount of people is unreal. I checked a box while I was here. I visited the 5th Avenue Apple store. It is as cool as you think it would be. It’s a giant glass cube with the Apple logo on it. The store is under the cube. The glass opens and there is an elevator or a big glass spiral stair case leading down to the store. We are going to spend today at the church house ...

2 Baptisms

Image
Greetings family and friends, This week we had two baptisms. We had a recent convert bring her friend to church. Her name is Karen and she was interested in the Church so we started teaching her. We have been teaching her for about 3 weeks and she was baptized this week. The other baptism was a Haitian. We were tracting and he was sitting on a bench. His name is Jean Louis. We invited him to come to Church and he said yes. He doesn’t speak English or Spanish only French. We had to use a translation app to teach him. He came to all our lessons and Church every week. He accepted baptism and the ward has been great to help him out.  I had zone conference this week. We travelled to Woodside which is in Queens. The general topic was about the importance of church attendance and the sacrament. It was very motivating to hear about how the willingness of people to attend correlates to baptism. If you don’t come to church, you're not going to endure to the end. I got an awesome package from...

New Transfer

Image
Hola from NY A couple of weeks ago my companion received a ticket for running a stop sign. His ticket was for not stopping and failure to yield right of way. I tell this story because it got worse. Last P-Day on our way home, we got in a crash, same missionary. He ran into the back of another car. In his defense, the car braked quickly, but his fault for running into the back. Everyone is ok. To say the least, his driving days are over. Driving here is always an adventure. This week has been more teaching on the street. We did not have any baptisms but have a couple people who are close. We should have a couple this week. Last week was transfers. I am staying in Far Rockaway and got a new companion. He is from Nicaragua and has been out about 4 months. His name is Elder Pravia. He mostly speaks Spanish which is good because I get to keep up on my skills. He does understand some English so I do use a little English still. The weather here has been pretty mild. It is cooling down but the...

Soaking New York

Image
Greeting from soggy NY, It has been a wet week. You may have seen the state of emergency that was declared in New York. It was quit the flood event. The skies opened up and wow, did it rain. The water filled the subways and streets. We drove around and tried to keep our car doors above water. Where we live wasn’t too bad, but other areas really got hit. It rained 8 inches in a few hours. The most rain ever recorded in one day in New York. It was raining at a rate of 2.5 inches per hour at JFK airport which is close to my apartment. When it was raining so hard, we didn’t really go out. We made phone calls all day. The rest of the week we did the regular street contacting. I watched conference at our church on the fourth floor of the office building we meet in. We had both English and Spanish versions going because our branch is both languages. I mostly watched in English. The Spanish version goes really fast so it was a little difficult to keep up. I loved to hear the talks and especial...

Walking The Streets

Image
Greeting from Far Rockaway  This week was another week of street contacts. The weather has hampering our efforts due to all the rain. Tropical storm Ophelia has been running up the coast. I am learning about the  weather that comes off the ocean. It is overcast a lot of the time and rains frequency. I am sure the humidity plays a big part.  I went to Manhattan this week for interviews. My companion and I had to come early to bring other missionaries into town so we decided to get off the subway a few stops early and walk the streets of Manhattan. Believe it or not, I felt safe the entire time. We had to avoid Times Square (we stayed a block away) but did walk down the sidewalks near the iconic building you would recognize. I took a few pictures for you to see.   We had two baptisms this week. They are form Puerto Rico. We have been teaching them for a couple of weeks. They are brother and sister (Jeidilian and Omar). They are very humble and were searching ...

Calmer Waters

Greeting everyone, Just another week in Far Away (Rockaway). My week has been full of contacting people on the street. We have maybe 70 people who said they will come to church. Maybe 7-8 show up. That is actually good. This week we taught a lot of Venezuelan families. There is a family shelter here in Far Rockaway. We are teaching 3 to 4 families who are Venezuelan. We can’t baptize the parents yet because they have to be married. We are trying to help them through the process of marriage so we can get them baptized. My companion and I went to the building our church meets in. Remember from last week we meet in a business building on the fourth floor. We went to the roof and took some pictures. One is looking toward Manhattan and the other toward the Atlantic Ocean. The other picture is the beach now hurricane Lee has passed by. It is a lot calmer. The beach is a one minute walk from our apartment. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. I love being on a mission and serving as t...

Baptism In Rockaway

Image
Hello from Far Rockaway, This week we had another baptism. It is hard to take credit but.... we will. The missionaries that we replaced had been teaching Dannette and she was almost ready for baptism. We taught her one lesson and invited her to be baptized. Dannette agreed and was baptized that week. I am starting to get use to the area and learning to teach again in English. I taught this week in English and it is a bit of a change for me. It is weird to have to think of words in English. The rest of my week has not been to eventful. I talk to a lot of people and invite all to come to church. Of course we get turned away at times and some listen but aren’t interested. I pray we are planting seeds. We are keeping our eyes to the sky. Hurricane Lee is churning up the coast headed our way, but is suppose to stay off shore. The hurricane is stirring up some spectacular storms though. I wish I could sent a video of the lightning off the coast, it is awesome. The ocean is crashing harder in...
