Manhatten Temple

Image
Where has two weeks gone? As I mentioned in my last email, I may be able to go to the Manhattan Temple and do baptisms for the dead. Well, it worked out. I was able to go with my companion (who baptized the guy in the black hat), the missionaries in his area now and the Branch President. The sister is a ward member. I am doing a lot of teaching on the street and we have some people coming to church. I hope they progress and get baptized. Craziest thing happened. I was in Flushing inviting people to church and ran into a couple of people I was teaching in Far Rockaway. I started to invite them then, wait a second, I know you. The Larry was baptized and had moved to Flushing. Katrina now lives in Brooklyn but was in Flushing for the day. The work is moving forward. I am amazed at the people from around the world I meet who listen to the Spirit and find the truth of the Gospel. I am honored to be able to do the work of the Savior in New York. Flushing Week One

Image
First week in Flushing, complete. I have learned a new Chinese word, church. This is how it is said, 教会. Everyone got it? Good, because I’m not so sure myself. My first week here has not been that big of a deal to adjust. One difference is we don’t have a car. We walk or take the bus to wherever we need to go. The church is only a 5 minute walk from where we live so no bus on Sunday. Most of our contacting people is within walking distance as well, so the bus isn’t a huge part of what we do here. I spoke in church this week. This is my second time since I have been out. I spoke on the Restoration which was pretty easy to do because we teach that all the time. This week we had a baptism, Joshua Ji Kwang Chun. He was born here in the states but has Korean parents. He has been taught for some time from the missionaries before I got here. He kind of went MIA for a while, then returned to Church. He was able to meet the requirements and chose to be baptized so we were able to take care of i...

Flushing New York

Image
I have been transferred. The day before my transfer I got a flat tire so not a great start to getting  ready to leave Far Rockaway. Luckily I knew how to change the tire and it went smoothly. I  think I have been transferred to China. I am now in Flushing, New York. It is a part of Queens.  This area is the largest Chinatown in the world. When you walk down the street there is  Chinese writing on all the signs and businesses. It literally looks like a street in China. Flushing  is also home to the Mets MLB team and the US Open tennis tournament that is in Flushing  Meadows Park.   I had my first full on authentic Chinese meal. One of the Chinese members took the Flushing  area Elders to the full on deal. He spoke Chinese to the waitresses and we had no idea what  we were getting. The food kept coming onto a spinning center part of the table and you would  just spin and grab what you want. I’m not so sure what I ate and it’s going to...

Happy New Year!

Image
Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have a great New Year. This week I am coming into transfers. I have been in Far Rockaway for three transfers and assume I will be moving to a new area. I will miss the view over the Atlantic but now the weather is colder I will be glad to be away from the ocean. This week I had two baptisms. Marie and Merrill got baptized. Marie is from Haiti and Merrill is from Alabama. They are not a couple but two separate people.  We had a mission devotional over Zoom on Sunday. We were presented with the new Mission President and his wife. We were read their bio and saw a picture. They are form California. President Holmes and his wife will complete their mission at the end of June. On Christmas we were invited to dinner at the Senior Missionaries home. We had a nice home cooked meal. We had ham, mashed potatoes, vegetables and a roll. It was good to sit down with our district over a nice Christmas meal and just relax and enjoy ...

Tender Mercies

It has been an adventure the last couple weeks. In my last email, I talked about Isaiah, the 11  year boy who’s parents are both inactive. We have been teaching him for 3 weeks and have  been to his house everyday last week. We invited him to be baptized which he accepted. We  then had to get permission from his parents which was denied. It is sad to see this happen  were he is ready and willing and his parents refused. We are going to have to drop him from our  teaching but hope he continues to attend church.   We did find another friend who speaks French. Her name is Marie. We are using Google  Translate to teach her the Gospel and I think she will get baptized. She was already aware of  the Church from a nephew who is a member. She is very patient because the services we  provide are Spanish and English. I sat on the back row of Sacrament meeting and the second  hour using the translator the best I could. She is a sweet older lad...

Time In Manhattan

Image
Hello everyone, The last couple weeks have gone by quickly. There hasn’t been a lot going on. We are teaching a 10 year old son of a member right now. I think he will be getting baptized soon. We knock a few doors at apartment building but mostly street contacts. It is still all about inviting everyone to church. My last transfer, if you remember, I was opening another companionship into the same area. It has been a lot more work starting to find a whole new teaching pool. We are starting from zero and finding people is going slow but I am having some success. The weather here is starting to get colder at night, but no snow yet. This week I have Presidents interviews. That means a trip to Manhattan. I am going to spend the day just wandering around Manhattan. So far I have been to Rockefeller Plaza and the Empire State Building. I found a Lego store and Nike store, of course didn’t buy anything. The rest of the day I am going to hang out at the Manhattan temple waiting for interviews t...

Transfer

Hola todos los personas,  It has been a couple weeks. I had transfers last week. I am staying in Far Rockaway but am opening a new area. I am moving out of my current apartment and moving into a new one not far away.   A really interesting thing happened a couple weeks ago. We were at church at our small branch. If you remember we meet in a rented room on the 5th floor of a building in Far Rockaway. In comes the Presiding Bishop Gerald Causse and his counselors. They spoke at our sacrament meeting. The counselors spoke about the truthfulness of the Gospel. Bishop Causse spoke about how he has always been the happiest in his life when he has the companionship of the Holy Ghost. It was really neat to get to meet with him and his counselors after the meeting. Crazy they would just show up to a small branch in little Far Rockaway.   I have been working with a family from Peru. The entire family was going to be baptized the Saturday after I left. Because I was so clo...
